Our Story

Run by students, for the community

Our projects

We currently run eight projects in local primary and secondary schools, colleges and prisons, and in partnership with the Centre of Criminal Appeals and the Citizens' Advice Bureau, amongst many others. For more information about these individual projects, please see the 'projects' page.

Awards

Over the last five years we have either been awarded or nominated Best Society on the University of Nottingham campus by the Students' Union. We also earned Best Academic Experience at the University two years in a row (2016 and 2017).

We have been nominated for national awards, in 2017 being shortlisted amongst the eight Best Societies in the UK, and in 2018 being shortlisted for Best Student Engagement. (LawCareers.Net National Awards.)

At the same national awards, in 2017 we won Best Social Event. In 2018 and 2019 we were nominated for Best Pro Bono Activities, making us one of the top three pro bono societies in the UK.

In 2018, we were presented with an award from the Attorney General for our charity fundraising for the Bar Pro Bono Unit.

In 2019 we were nominated for Best Student Experience, Best Fundraising Initiative, and Most Improved Society. We won Best Green Group as well as Student Volunteer Group of 2018-19 at the 2019 University Students' Union awards.

Membership

Students at the University of Nottingham can join the Society for only £1 a year, which gives them access to all the events our projects host (https://www.su.nottingham.ac.uk/societies/society/pro-bono/). Our Teamup Calendar (https://teamup.com/ksett5p545u77vcece) lets you know what events, trips, etc. are going on and when. It informs members of how to apply and the training they will receive (if required). Members then simply apply for the project event(s) they fancy and, if selected, turn up! There is no requirement for our members to do anything specifically; it's all their choice.

Our Society does not meet with members (besides at AGMs) on a regular basis because we are always in contact with each other throughout the year at our events.

Thank you!

None of this would be possible without the work of our committed volunteers and our fantastic sponsors, who make our projects what they are. For more information about our sponsors, please see the 'Meet Our Sponsors' page. You can also see some of the blogs our members have produced in the 'blog' page above.
