THE HOWARD LEAGUE

PENAL

The Howard League for Penal Reform is a national organisation concerned with the state of prisons in the UK. They focus on the conditions inmates live in, the level of rehabilitative care they gain, and the general state of the prison and appeals system.

The UoN Howard League continues their national work on campus. We organise talks from speakers such as Nick Hardwick, the previous head of the parole board in the UK and other prominent people in the field. We have also had visits from Mark Mullins and Frances Crook.

There are also opportunities to attend different prisons and experience the conditions that inmates live in, as well as talk to members of staff and usually the governor. In the past, we have visited HMYOI Werrington, and HMP&YOI Swinfen Hall.
